Show Me Some Respect!

For my choice assignment, I chose to do a Social Justice lesson with my students. We focused on the act of showing respect. Here are some photos from the lesson. Enjoy!
This was the introduction to the lesson & when the students talked about who they respected & why.

We read the story, Interrupting Chicken, & learned what it looks like to NOT show respect.

Students then were given the option to show what it looks like to be respectful through writing, acting, or drawing. Here is a fist bump!

High Five!

BIG smiles & hand games :)

Holding hands & smiling.

RR 21: Application of Performance

In Robert's case, he chose a performance to display his ethnographic research. He chose to use a poetic text as the spoken words in order to portray a certain meaning. The words were strategically placed throughout the poetic text to give certain emphasis and meaning. There were breaks in the narrative after certain words and phrases to emphasize the concept.

I think Robert chose an interesting way of speaking and performing in order to emphasize specific phrases and themes throughout his research. Performing this type of research in this way most likely proved very powerful and interesting.

RR 20: TODD

Organizing time and space to write & develop a plan is half the battle. The process that helps me to organize my thoughts is to make a general outline of what my plan is. This helps to put some sort of timeline & process with what I need to be doing. My outline starts with a broad introduction to what it means to feel empathy and will move through to my social justice action plan and will finish with representing the outcome using art.
I believe my project will take around 2-3 weeks & I will devote some of my Social Sciences time to this project. I also have some prep periods during the day that I may use to develop my lesson & gather the necessary items.

RR 19: Performance

I believe performance is a valuable tool for ethnography since it presents certain data in a different way. As it says on page 166, performing can be a way for the audience to experience the research or data. When you read a paper on ethnographic research, you may get a general understanding but it may be presented in a boring or dull tone. If you are able to see it performed, you may get a deeper understanding as well as get a feel for the experience the subjects may have had.

RR 18: Richardson Article

The article written by Richardson poses many questions that may be considered by someone who is conducting ethnographic research. I especially liked the 5 questions/statements that she included towards the end of the article. I feel that they may serve as an outline to many throughout their research. I think statements 3 and 5 are especially important. Number 3 touches upon the ethical issues as well as the subjectivity of the research. Statement 5 discusses if the research feels credible or real, which is another important factor to keep in mind. I believe this article is a refresher of what someone may be looking for when examining ethnographic research.

RR 17: Acting as Art

Here is another example of an Anna Deveare Smith performance, Fires in the Mirror. She researched & interviewed the characters first & then performed monologues.

RR 16: Photo Essays

Here is an interesting photo essay on the Great Depression. It has many different photographs that convey the terrible struggles people faced during that time.
